Fourth Grade Traces the "Journey to America"

Peter Twadell's class covered the Russian-Jewish story (early 1900's), while Patrice Preston's class told the tale of Chinese laborers in California during the period of rapid expansion based out of San Francisco in the mid-1800's. Gwen Cox's class recounted the story of Irish immigration motivated by the infamous potato famine, and finally, Wendy Reed's class told two immigrant stories focusing on Cuban-Americans and Czech/Lebanese Americans.

Peter Twadell recounts, "In addition to the usual difficulties encountered when performing a long play with songs, the fourth-grade actors were also faced with some excitable 6th graders who opened the side doors during a narration, sax playing, and bass drum bonging! Throw in some babies and toddlers . . . Ah, it was great and the 4th graders handled every excitement with aplomb and humor."

In a congratulatory note Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston wrote, "The journey to the performance of "Journey to America" was not without its challenges, but from where I sat, the children's arrival at their delightful destination made the trip more than worthwhile. Bravo, everyone!"
