Gift of Flag is Holiday Surprise

Head of Upper School Ceil Millar had an office full of holiday packages--gifts from students to be distributed to children in need--when a box for McDonogh School landed on her desk. In it, Millar found an ornately carved wooden shadow box holding a folded American flag and a certificate that read:

"Let it be known that this flag of the United States of America was flown in the face of the enemy over the United States Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, formerly used as the Iraqi Embassy, bearing witness to the sacrifices made to protect the freedom of the United States of America and the world in the Global War on Terrorism during Operation Enduring Freedom on 4 July 2005 in honor of McDonogh School." The certificate was signed by U.S. Army Colonel John B. O'Dowd.

The gift was a token of thanks for the 40 bags of clothing that McDonogh students sent to Kabul last year for refugees and orphans. Martina D. '06 spearheaded the drive after her father, a civilian project manager for the Army Corps of Engineers in Kabul, told her about the citizens' abject needs. She relayed the information to fellow upper schoolers, and the community rallied to help.

The beautiful wooden box and its contents will be displayed as soon as a suitable spot for it can be found.
