Headmaster Bo Dixon honored history teacher and track coach Jeff Sanborn with the Howard C. “Dutch” Eyth Endowed Teaching Chair at a February 10 faculty meeting. The headmaster referred to Sanborn using the old expression “good school man,” a term applied to those whose broad contributions to a school community make them an integral part of it.
Jeff Sanborn has been highly involved in school life, just as longtime teacher and former athletic director Dutch Eyth was until he died in 2002. Sanborn has served in a variety of roles since he arrived on campus in 1984: assistant director of admissions, director of boarding, advisor to the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Leaders, coach for 63 seasons, campus parent, and history teacher.
Students like to kid him about his distinctive expressions and New England accent, but they hold Sanborn in high esteem for his guidance in and out of the classroom. He has provided his charges with extraordinary experiences over the years, including an April 2004 visit to the Pentagon, a December 2000 trip to the Washington, D.C. to witness post-election protests, and numerous visits to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Endowed teaching chairs reward outstanding faculty members, who receive extra stipends for the three-years they hold the awards. Other current recipients include fourth-grade teacher Patrice Preston, kindergarten teacher Donna Ward, and Director of Computer Services Mike Robertson.
