High Point for Sixth-Graders

On April 19, Mrs. Mulligan’s sixth grade advisory went to the clock tower. We were allowed to make this visit by Mr. Larry Johnston, who led our tour. Mr. Johnston told us that we were the first Middle School class to tour the tower. We had fun learning and visiting the highest point on McDonogh’s campus.

Mr. Johnston took us through a scary doorway in the dance studio and led us up a slender, spiral staircase. Some of us were frightened at first, but after we saw that it was not as dark as we imagined, our fears dispersed. At the end of the spiral stairwell, we were standing on a platform. Outside of where we were standing, the clock faces can be seen.

As we journeyed upward, we learned some interesting facts. We learned that boys used to sneak up to the clock tower when McDonogh was a military school. We also passed the place where upperclassmen enjoy their poetry readings by candlelight. Mr. Johnston showed us the old mechanism for the clocks, which controlled them until it was replaced in 1994.

Once at the very top, we were able to write our names on the walls. There were many names from past years. Mr. Young '70, a math teacher in the Middle School, had written his name in large letters. From our viewpoint, we had a nice panorama of the whole campus. We could even see Owings Mills Mall.

We thoroughly enjoyed this enriching experience, as it taught us more about the history of McDonogh School. We would like to thank Mr. Johnston for this tour of the clock tower.
