History Dept. Adds Context to U.S. vs. Iraq

"We strongly believe that living in this land gives us the right and the duty to have information and make up our own minds," Dave Harley added. Then he turned the microphone over to his colleagues.

John Wood provided a snapshot of Iraqi history: its early existence as part of the Ottoman Empire, its beginnings under British control, and its emergence as an independent nation in 1932. He described the country's rapid economic development after 1958, when oil resources brought prosperity; Saddam Hussein's arrival in power in the early 1970's; shifting alliances among Middle Eastern countries, the U.S., and the Soviet Union; and major conflicts in the region.

Ane Lintvedt continued with a more recent perspective, describing, among other things, some of the U.N. sanctions against Iraq following the Gulf War. She also added a balanced overview of President Bush's policies with respect to Iraq.

Jeff Sanborn explained the President's national security strategy issued September 20. He defined the doctrine of a preemptive strike and how it relates to the post-World War II U.S. policy of containment and deterrence.

In conclusion, Dave Harley implored students to pay attention to this particular crisis, to learn more, and to decide where they stand.
