Athletic Director Mickey Deegan announced today that alumnus and former assistant coach Ian Hendricks, son of the late Elrod Hendricks, has been named head coach of the school’s varsity baseball team. Hendricks replaces Chet Janiga, who has decided to step down after 12 seasons at McDonogh (144-131) and 28 years coaching independent school baseball.
Hendricks tells his story in today's Baltimore Examiner.
Since 1999, Hendricks has served as an assistant coach of McDonogh’s varsity and junior varsity teams. He signed with the New York Mets after graduating from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in 1998, but injury prevented him from playing professional ball.
Hendricks played second base in high school and college. At St. Andrews, he was a 4-year starter and team captain. During high school, Hendricks was a 3-year starter and a member of the 1992 MSA “A” Conference championship team. He was also part of runner-up teams in 1993 and 1994. Hendricks was named to the 1994 All Metro team and the All City/County baseball teams in 1993 and 1994.
In recent years McDonogh's baseball program has produced two players in the Orioles farm system: Brandon Erbe '05, the ball club's #3 draft pick in 2005, and Paul Winterling '00, a Johns Hopkins University star now on the Aberdeen Iron Birds roster.
