Parents, teachers, and administrators watched 104 eighth-graders receive their certificates of promotion Tuesday, June 7 on Childs Memorial Terrace. Before they went on their way, Head of Middle School Darren Ford wished graduates well and urged them to take advantage of all the opportunities in the Upper School.
Student speakers Ruthie and Matt spoke wisely and eloquently about the Class of 2009. Looking back, Ruthie said: "The farther our lives take us from childhood, the more our perception of time and life in general changes. ...we’ve learned over time is that if everyone were the same, or if relationships stayed the same, then there wouldn’t be any variety in life and people would never grow."
Matt looked forward, using the story of the recently dedicated marble eagle monument by the Class of 1949 as a metaphor. Just as its creator, Bill Sunderland '49, began as a whittler of soap and became a sculptor of marble, so the classmates of 2009 will become solid citizens like their '49 predecessors. "Maybe, if we continue to carve, like Mr. Sunderland’s Class of ’49, we too will be made of marble," Matt said.
While at the podium, both student speakers thanked departing administrators Becky and Bobby Walker, who have accepted positions as heads of middle schools in Connecticut. "They made our transition from goofy knuckleheads to the teenagers we are today as smooth as anyone could," said Ruthie. "They made it seem like changing wasn’t such a bad thing."
Headmaster Bo Dixon advised the Class of 2009 to see beyond the obvious, to look for the real truth in situations. He promised a free lunch to each class member who writes him a letter on that theme over the summer.
