Katrina Relief Plan Set

When the McDonogh School community celebrates Founder’s Day on Friday, October 14, the words of founder John McDonogh will seem more timely than ever: “Study in the course of your life to do the greatest possible amount of good.”

Today, the school community adopted a plan for Hurricane Katrina relief, establishing a connection with McDonogh #26 and the rest of the New Orleans public schools. Headmaster Bo Dixon worked through the Louisiana Department of Education to create this alliance between the Baltimore school and the New Orleans school system that share a heritage. Benefactor John McDonogh bequeathed his fortune to support both.

The Rollins-Luetkemeyer Leaders launched a fundraising effort last week in the Upper School. The other two divisions are expected to follow the R-Ls lead.

Located in the Jefferson Parish, McDonogh #26 is a pre-K-5 school enrolling 260 students. Hurricane Katrina damaged the school building, destroyed teachers’ homes, and left students without their belongings.

“We will form alliances with many of the schools and faculty, but our first job will be to refurnish two PK [pre-kindergarten] rooms, which were totally destroyed - rugs, maps, cubbies, desks, chairs, books, etc.,” Dixon wrote to students and faculty. He asked McDonogh #26 officials to let him know the cost of the project and promised that the McDonogh School community would send a check to cover it.

“I emphasized that McDonogh was in this for the long haul, and we await our next project,” he added.
