On December 5, the Holt family, clad in festive African attire, celebrated Kwanzaa with the kindergarten classes. Through storytelling, dancing, and music, the children learned that Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, but a celebration of the African-American family, culture, and community. Mr. Holt pointed out that the word Kwanzaa has seven letters, and explained the significance of the number seven. Kwanzaa lasts for seven days, has seven principles and seven basic symbols. The children were particularly enthusiastic about the sixth principle, Kuumba, which stands for creativity. At this point in the presentation, the kindergartners were invited to show their own creativity by dancing, singing and clapping. The celebration ended with a feast that included homemade sweet potato pies, a traditional holiday favorite.
