Let There Be Peace on Earth

As the year 2001 passes into history, we will remember it not for the peace that reigned around the world or for the light of understanding that drew the world’s people closer together. It was a year, in fact, when our national peace was shattered and shadows of fear crept across our land. Peace and light seem more illusive now, and perhaps because of that we treasure them even more.

2001, grades 3-4Enter the children! If these boys and girls are to succeed in building a world more peaceful than our own, it will be because they have learned to understand, respect, and value each other despite their differences—or maybe even because of them. All of us who love them and wish for them a lifetime of peace must help them understand that they have far more to love than to fear in the child seated beside them whose skin or hair or eyes or name is different from their own.

Today you will hear children of every faith sing authentic songs that are part of traditions not necessarily their own. Through song and story, they will show us that although race and religion sometimes divide us, there is far more in the human heart and spirit that binds us together. May the light in your children’s eyes and joy in the voices bring happiness and peace to you today and throughout the coming year.
