On Tuesday, March 18, NBC's The Today Show will air the segment featuring McDonogh parent Donna Nakazawa's new book, THE AUTOIMMUNE EPIDEMIC: Bodies Gone Haywire in a World Out of Balance -- and the Cutting Edge Science That Promises Hope.
The piece starts with a discussion of "the hygiene hypothesis" then segues into the book, why Nakazawa wrote it(her father suffered from 'a constellation of autoimmune diseases and Nakazawa was temporarily affected by an autoimmune disease herself), and why we need to look more deeply at what is causing this growing epidemic.
Writes Nakazawa, "THE AUTOIMMUNE EPIDEMIC has been, as so many of you know, a labor of absolute love. In the book, I take readers inside today's top labs to show how "autogens" (a term I coin to describe the toxins, pesticides, everyday chemicals and viruses that play a role in triggering autoimmune disease) are putting an unbearable load on the human immune system. That's why rates of autoimmune diseases -- including multiple sclerosis, lupus, type 1 diabetes, and nearly 100 other disorders in which the body turns from friend to foe and attacks itself - have doubled and tripled in the past four decades.
THE AUTOIMMUNE EPIDEMIC offers hope - and practical advice about making the personal, political and day-to-day choices that can help us to curb this epidemic before it's too late.
