Slip Slidin' Away

It was "Water, Water Everywhere" on Wednesday, September 12 as lower schoolers celebrated the successful completion of the annual summer reading challenge set by Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston. This year's goal of 3,500 books was surpassed (they read 3,579!) and the prize was a day of water-themed fun.

The day began with lessons in H2O. First-graders read "Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister and "Swimmy" by Leo Lionni, created their own fish with glitter, and worked on a graphing activity in math using Goldfish crackers. Third grade classes studied oceans covering the earth, evaporation and condensation, and how cities store water in reservoirs. Fourth graders illustrated the opening scenes of "Music of Dolphins" by local author Karen Hesse with watercolors.

The dining hall staff surprised the students with a lunch of crab soup, fish sticks, watermelon, and green jello cups with gummy fish.

After they finished eating, the children put on their bathing suits and ran through sprinklers, enjoyed an "Ocean Bounce," blew bubbles, and hurtled down one of the three slip 'n slides set up on campus. Mrs. Lidston and Headmaster Charlie Britton got in on the fun by sliding down in an inflatable "Pool Bus," while other lower school teachers joined their students in the sprinklers.
