Students in all three divisions have contributed to the penny drive, which has been spearheaded by Middle School math teacher Carrie Norry's seventh-grade advisor group. Mrs. Norry introduced the project in September to help students understand the quantity of a million and the importance of philanthropy.
All students were invited to suggest where the million pennies, or $10,000, should be donated. A committee reviewed students' persuasive essays this week. Baltimore Reads, a suggestion of seventh-graders Mitchell C. and Nick K., will receive $8,500. The remaining $1,500 will be used to replace books lost when the kindergarten building flooded in February after heavy snow and rain.
Mrs. Norry was especially moved by Mitchell's case for Baltimore Reads, for whom the seventh-grader has done extensive volunteering. Added Mrs. Norry, "It is my hope that our students can volunteer and be involved with Baltimore Reads in the future."
