Compelling essays by seventh-graders Mitchell C. and Nick K. made the case for Baltimore Reads, a non-profit organization that promotes literacy among children and adults. Mitchell volunteers there, serving on the group’s Kids Committee. “I told the story of a woman who learned to read from Baltimore Reads,” said Mitchell. “Reading is a really important skill.” Students have learned to understand and appreciate philanthropy, but penny drive organizer Carrie Norry, a seventh-grade math teacher, also will make sure they get to see what a million looks like. The pennies will be on display for all to view before they are trucked to the bank.
