Senior Wins International Photo Prize

When photography teacher John Lehr persuaded Jessica D. ‘02 take his Photo II class, she enrolled, reluctantly. When he prompted Jessica to submit her work in an international contest, she complied, reluctantly. John Lehr’s instincts proved right when she won first place.

Jessica’s project was to shoot landscape as a reflection of cultural trends and values. “I often went to Enchanted Forest as a child, and seeing it dilapidated as it is now was a sharp reminder of how our country seems to have lost its innocence as well,” Jessica says, reflecting on her work months after September 11. “The contrast of the bright colors and fairytale characters and the rust and decay that were overtaking them saddened me: here was my forgotten childhood, here was my country.”

Processing her images required ingenuity, since McDonogh has no color darkroom facilities. Jessica scanned the color negatives with a film scanner, adjusted them with photo editing software on the computer, and printed them on photo-quality inkjet paper.

Jessica was both thrilled and surprised to receive news of her honor. “It's ironic because I've been fighting taking photography since the beginning of this year, but over the past few months Mr. Lehr has taught me to love it.”
