Mr. Harley fired the starter gun at 2:50 p.m., signaling the start of speed heat one. The crew of Crazy Taxi, a group of proud freshmen, manuevered the yellow craft to victory. After bearing too far left, those aboard Fo'Shizzle Mizzle finally steered straight to finish second. U.S.S. Slight Chance managed to finish third despite paddle problems.
In heat two, Sleipner took the early lead and never relinquished it. The crew of Ogygia paddled mightily to take second. Salvage, the cardboard boat designed to look like a cardboard boat, finished third.
All boats raced in the final heat. The judges then determined the 2003 cardboard award winners. In addition to those already mentioned, Fo'Shizzle Mizzle took the honors for aesthetic value and creative engineering. Ogygia won payload for supporting the most crew members. The Crazy Taxi team received the valiant effort trophy and claimed bragging rights for actually winning a speed heat as freshmen. Salvage earned the cheap boat and pure gall awards. BOB winner Sleipner also took home the building technique and procession honors.
