Student boats race across pond

On Friday, May 28, over forty Upper School students took to the pond to compete in the Cardboard Boat Race, a long-standing springtime tradition at McDonogh. The race was the end product of three intense weeks of work in which student groups built seaworthy crafts out of only nine sheets of corrugated cardboard, glue, and waterproofing materials. Each boat had to hold at least four paddlers whose main goal was to win the coveted "Best Overall Boat" award, affectionately nicknamed "BOB."

This year's race proved especially exciting due to a controversial photo finish in which a senior-manned Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle raft narrowly beat a boat built in the likeness of a giant cicada. While the Seniors took home the award for Best Time, the cicada received the 2004 "BOB". All awards, which included the creative engineering prize, among others, were also constructed out of cardboard. The Cardboard Boat Race is a voluntary extracurricular activity co-sponsored by McDonogh's arts and science departments.
