The Trophy is Home

Defensive end Cameron G. played a huge role in keeping the Greyhounds to only three points, consistently penetrating the Gilman offensive line and coming away with four sacks. Sophomore linebacker Bryn H. had one interception, while junior defensive back Tony L. collected another.

Tony’s interception was the play of the game. He picked off Alex Wharton’s pass at midfield with 1:30 left in the game to stymie the Greyhounds’ attack in their last-ditch effort to come back.

Both teams came out of the gate sluggish, unable to move the ball. McDonogh’s only offensive score in the first half was a 25-yard field goal by junior Brian W. with 8:18 left in the half.

In the waning minutes of the first half, Gilman had the opportunity to tie the game. Colin Deering missed a 21-yard field goal wide left by inches.

McDonogh showed marked improvement offensively in the second half. Sanborn strung several key passes together, hitting targets Justin D. and Darius. The Eagles, however, were unable to convert those drives into touchdowns.

Forced to punt with 10:07 left in the game, the Eagles special teams allowed Gilman sophomore D.J. Johnson to recover a blocked punt in the end zone. McDonogh got revenge when it blocked the ensuing extra point.

The victory finishes a 7-3 season for the Eagles, who lost two league games against Mt. St. Joe and Loyola. Nonetheless, they are guaranteed at least third place in the conference.

Gilman, on the other hand, ends its season at 3-7, making it the first time in head coach Biff Poggi’s seven years at the helm that the Greyhounds have had a losing season. Their league record of 1-3 pits them in a tie for last place with Mt. St. Joe.
