Impressive Equestrian Victories

McDonogh equestrians rode to a series of impressive victories in major national competitions: the Local Day and Zone Finals at the Washington International Horse Show on October 17, the Local Champion Class Competition in Washington, D.C. on October 25, and the American Eventing Championships in Wayne, Illinois in September.

Jacob P.'s '13 win in the Gittings Horsemanship Finals at the Washington event was especially significant. "This is the first time a McDonogh student has won this historic Junior Equitation Class honor since the 1960s," said Amy Moore '90, Jacob's coach. "Irv Naylor '54, Taylor Cook '46, Tim '73 and Wade Gowl '69 - all icons in Maryland horse history and recipients of the Gittings Champion Title - would all be proud to know this young man has followed in their footsteps," Moore added. Jacob also won the Younger Children's Hunter Class.

Also at Local Day and Zone Finals, Sarah B. '18, McDonogh's youngest team member, kicked her way in the pouring rain to Short Stirrup Reserve Champion. Emily G. '10 received the Reserve Champion Award in the Older Children’s Hunter Division, and Alexie S. '15 won back-to-back championships on her pony Seastar. By the end of the soggy day, Jacob, Emily, and Alexie qualified for the Local Champion Class Competition at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on October 25.

The success story continued at the Verizon Center on October 25. Alexie S. became the first McDonogh pony rider to win the Big Class and become Grand Champion. "I wasn't nervous, I was just ready to ride," said Alexie, after completing a perfect round.

Both Emily G. and Jacob P. rode in a competitive field against the best children's hunters and the best adult hunters. Emily rode her young horse Noble Image beautifully. Unfortunately, Noble Image made a "green" mistake, costing Emily a ribbon.

Jacob, the youngest in the class, once again rode Savannah (owned by Emily G.) perfectly and was awarded a fifth place ribbon. Jacob and Savannah finished with enough points to earn them the Washington International Horse Show Grand Reserve Local Horse Champion, another first for McDonogh's riding program.

Earlier this fall, Emily A. '13, competed against 62 riders and finished thirteenth, by a matter of seconds, at the American Eventing Championships held at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois. Emily qualified for this national championship event by earning points and ribbons in recognized horse trials on the East Coast.
