Students, Professional Actors Perform "Julius Caesar"

A cast of 18 upper schoolers played "friends, Romans, and countrymen" along with professional actors from the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company in "Julius Caesar" on November 7 and 8 in the Ceres M. Horn Theater.

In this interpretation, the classic power struggle between factions--Brutus and Cassius vs. Antony and Octavius Caesar--resembled the mid-20th century gangster-era. CSC actors had major roles, while McDonogh students had small parts.

Said Katie F. '10. "It is so much fun experiencing a play in general, but to stand beside well-seasoned actors who have had lots of experience is a challenge, and also a wonderful undertaking!"

Added castmate Kelly S. '10, "It was such a great learning experience to work with the professionals from CSC. All the actors have so much energy and are inspiring to work with. They taught me to feed off the energy from the other actors on stage and vice versa."

This production of Julius Caesar marks McDonogh’s second residency with the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company. Cast members took master classes from CSC actors. Upper schoolers studying Shakespeare also received training from CSC artists. And play rehearsals mingled students and professional actors.

The joint performances," said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Kevin Costa, also a CSC actor, "create the kind of life-affecting experience that is the hallmark of the work we do at McDonogh."

As Costa wrote in his director's note in the play program,

"The residency affords students a relationship with Shakespeare that is direct, exciting, and genuine."

I am proud of the work our students achieve in the theatre and in all the arts at McDonogh, and I look forward to creating engaging, authentic programs like this in the years to come," said Costa.
