When John Scott ’77 received instructions from his church to find a new home for its 1987 Allen digital organ, he wondered if McDonogh might want the instrument for Tagart Memorial Chapel. “Yes!” exclaimed Director of Choral Music Philip Olsen.
Scott, facilities manager for Mountain Christian Church, was on hand Sunday, November 22 for the dedication of the new-to-McDonogh organ. Olsen thanked Scott and acknowledged others who were “instrumental” in the organ’s relocation to McDonogh, including Scott's classmate, Head of Advancement Eileen Toohey ’77, and jazz band director Donald New.
An intimate recital showcased the organ’s rich tone quality and the talents of McDonogh’s faculty and students. Performers included faculty members Philip Olsen, Laura Garvin, Marshall Anders, Suzanne Eldridge, and Toni Stefano as well as upper schoolers Erin F. '11, Alessandra G. '11, and Jimmy R.’10.
It was Anders who procured the first organ for Tagart Chapel during his tenure as the school’s music director. He played a Gershwin medley on the digital piece during the recital.
The classical Allen digital organ produces a symphonic sound using electronic technology. Allen is the world's leading organ manufacturer. More than 80,000 Allen organs are in use today.
