If the students in Nancy Lewis’ second grade classroom had their way, John McDonogh would not be depicted standing straight as a statue on top of his monument, he would be doing something fun—like swimming, jumping on a trampoline or swinging in a tree with spider monkeys. And, the second graders would be there right along with him.
Considering John McDonogh in the year 2013 was part of a cross-curricular lesson which not only taught the students about the school’s namesake, but it also included creating a new monument out of clay and then writing about their design, including how they crafted their model. Most of the students felt John McDonogh would like to do the same things they enjoy, and some thought he would really enjoy living today so he could use an iPad and play video games.
Ria S., who depicted herself flying kites with John McDonogh, wrote, “I like flying kites right now, so I think John McD would have liked kites if he were alive.” She continued, “ I felt good about making my statue, but it took a lot of patience, hard work and courage. So if you ever make a statue, remember these three things.”
