An Open Letter to Eagles Fans from Mickey Deegan, Athletic Director

We need to be reminded that safety comes first, before convenience. McDonogh has bollards in place to stop vehicles from coming onto fields and pedestrian areas. And yet, not a day goes by that I don't see bollards removed and tossed to the ground, and cars parked illegally. Some fans literally creep onto the edges of a soccer or hockey field so they don't have to walk.

Well, let's try to do things the right way. Spectator parking is provided specifically near the RL Athletic Center. Fans should not park on Farm Road, along Woods Road, or grab a spot behind the RL Center.

Think about what you do when you come to watch a game. Are you excited to be outside? Do you think, “Hey, here's a chance to stretch my legs after sitting at a desk all day?” Can you enjoy a two-minute conversation with yourself as you walk to the field or court? Try it. Breathe the air. Look at the blue sky.

We live in a society that is fast paced, frenetic at times. It's like the Alabama song, "I'm In a Hurry to Get Things Done." Let's slow down our life a little bit. Please help us out when you come to school for athletic contests. If you have a special need, or if a grandpop wants to come watch his grandson play football, I will pick him up in a golf cart and take him to the 18th acre.

Let's not diminish the beauty of this campus by accidentally hitting a child or an adult because we were too rushed to park the car in the right area. Thanks for helping us with this concern!
