Define yourself by what you can do, says Mooney

Throughout his talks to school audiences yesterday, the candid, energetic, and funny Mooney focused on the positive. He implored students to discover what they love and to understand that there's no shame in asking for help. He told them to define themselves by what they can do rather than what they can't do.

He also explained the notion of purpose-based learning. "I can't do something," he told them, "unless I see its value." Mooney knew he wanted to play Division I college soccer. He made his way through chemistry and other challenging subjects by understanding how they mattered to his ultimate goal. He advised students to recognize what they want and realize what they need to do to get there.

Similarly, he urged parents and teachers to help kids identify their passions and learning styles. He warned against labeling children and suggested that there is harm in grouping students by ability.

Mooney provided an insider's view of how he learns. When you have ADHD, it's not that you pay attention less, he told them. You pay attention to everything.

The popular speaker left teachers with a list of resources and offered his e-mail address to any takers. With a laugh, he told groups to expect lots of misspellings in his return messages.
