Eagles Show Support for Van Brooks Recovery

When Loyola High School student-athlete Van Brooks suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury in a Fall 2004 football game, the incident led to an outpouring of financial and emotional support from the school’s MIAA rivals, and McDonogh was no exception. Hundreds of McDonogh students signed a banner that was on proud display at the Van Brooks Celebrity Auction and Gala, held on December 4 in Loyola’s field house. Over 1800 parents, students, and coaches attended the event, which included appearances from Ravens head coach Brian Billick and Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich.

Loyola parents Tim Thompson and Boh Hatter coordinated the event, which was meant to raise money and support for the 16 year-old tailback’s continuing recovery. McDonogh's four football captains joined a welcome line of over 200 students that greeted people as they entered the event. Many schools, including McDonogh, donated gift baskets and athletic merchandise to a live auction, and the Eagles also bought a Loyola football helmet to be presented to Van. All proceeds from the event benefited the Van Brooks Recovery Fund. Contributions to the Fund can be made at any branch of Provident Bank or by mail:
