Fifth Graders are Wordmasters

A team of students representing McDonogh recently won highest honors in the WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by over 225,000 students annually.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division of the Challenge and supervised by Barbara Nichols, the school's fifth graders placed sixth in the nation in the first of three meets to be held this academic year. A total of 705 school teams participate at this level and in this division.

One fifth grader won highest honors for individual achievement. Sam M. earned a perfect score in the meet, where nationwide only 74 fifth graders did so.

Other students who achieved outstanding results in the meet included fifth graders Danny B., Austin F., Noah K., Matt L., Rachel M., Lizzy O'C., Daniel S., Josh V., Jack A., Casey B., Lance G., Jamie M., Grace M., Hunter O., Nathaniel P., Jacob P., Emily R., and Alexa W. A total of 71 McDonogh fifth graders participated in the competition.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that encourages students to become familiar with a set of new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of relationships. “Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically, “ said Nichols.

The Wordmasters Challenge has been in existence for 19 years with over 225,000 students competing annually at three separate meets. McDonogh fifth graders have participated for the past six years. “I have continued to use this vocabulary building program because of the enthusiasm that it generates with the students. They love the idea that they are competing with kids across the nation, and they really try hard to beat the record of the previous class,” Nichols commented.
