Honors for Foreign Language Teacher Mara Daniel

Headmaster Bo Dixon surprised Head of Upper School Foreign Language Mara Daniel by naming her the first recipient of the newly established Major Louis E. "Doc" Lamborn Master Teaching Chair at a faculty and staff meeting on Thursday, February 15. This chair is McDonogh's first Endowed Chair for a Master Teacher.

The unsuspecting award winner was sitting with colleagues in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre as Dixon began to reveal her identity. He said, "As a teacher of both French and Spanish, she answers quickly to both "Madame" and "Senora."

During the thoughtful tribute, the headmaster referred to the 22-year veteran faculty member by saying, "Students love her classes because of her enthusiasm for the subject, her passion for language, and her love of young people." He also applauded her for being the organizing force behind the French and Spanish exchange programs as they have developed over the years.

When Dixon finally named the recipient as Mara Daniel, the audience stood and cheered. A stunned and honored Mara rose from her seat and made her way to the headmaster, who offered her a big hug and an engraved silver bowl. Meanwhile, her parents, who had secretly flown in from Florida for the announcement, came forward to congratulate her.

The award is named after longtime headmaster Doc Lamborn who was a visionary leader. During his 26-year tenure from 1926-1952, he transformed McDonogh into a leading independent school. Lamborn once said, "I believe that the only excuse for an independent school is that the school approaches each student as though he or she were the only student in that institution.

Dixon told the audience, "I would argue that Doc's greatest contribution was his philosophy, and we continue to reap the benefits of his great leadership."

The Major Louis E. "Doc" Lamborn Master Teaching Chair is made possible with the generous gifts of 13 alumni from the classes of 1943 to 1957.

Endowed chairs enrich McDonogh's academic community by honoring and recognizing great teaching as well as commitment to the McDonogh community. McDonogh has established six endowed faculty chairs since 1988. Each award, made for a period of three years, includes an annual stipend for the recipient. Additional interest generated from the endowment gifts goes into the faculty salary pool.
