Question. Hypothesize. Observe. Analyze. Draw conclusions. Over the past several weeks all 1st and 3rd grade students followed this scientific procedure – by themselves! Lower School science teachers, Peggy Moag and Emily Singer organized and ran a science fair encouraging students to be “creative and imaginative” and to devise an original science project that’s both “innovative and useful.” Brainstorming began in late March, and the experiments were conducted at home. Class time was spent gathering and interpreting data, and eventually making a cardboard display outlining their findings. At the end no single winner was selected; instead, everyone received a ribbon celebrating success in their first attempt at independent research.
