2001 boys and girls team soccer goaliesThey know how to read the game. They focus. They earn the trust of their teammates. They enjoy their teams, their training regimens, their coaches. They play on state and regional Olympic Development squads. Perhaps that’s why varsity goalkeepers Alex and Mariel have helped orchestrate a combined 15 shut-outs for McDonogh’s highly regarded boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.

Co-captain Mariel ’02, a varsity goalkeeper since her freshman year, is known for her ability to organize the defense and keep opponents’ balls from finding the net. “It’s obviously not just me,” she says, reflecting on the team’s success. “Every year we’re competitive. We find a way to win the big games. It’s fun.”

While Mariel is concluding her high school soccer career, Alex is just starting his. One of five freshman starters, he earned his place in goal by working hard. “It’s been great,” he says. “The kids, they teach you so much just from watching them.” As for the competition, he says, “We play against the best around. It only helps you get better.”
