Soldier's Letter Inspires Third-Graders

The students were delighted and surprised to receive a response to their letters, which they composed in February. "I'm amazed that he actually took the time to write a letter to us," said Conor. Jacob wondered how Sergeant Emmett was able to mail a response without a post office nearby. And Emmy wanted to know how long he's been away from home.

They loved that Sergeant Emmett mentioned them by name in his response and answered their questions about how he likes Kuwait, what sports he plays, and what animals he has at home. They also enjoyed his references to military time.

Each student chose an item to contribute to Sergeant Emmett's package: a book, gum, cards, soap, hard candy, peanuts, a disposable camera, a good-luck charm, shampoo, a coloring book and crayons, peanuts, and Mad-Libs.

They also composed new letters. One asked Sergeant Emmett about a name for the baby that he and his wife are expecting. After he writes them back, the students hope to send Mrs. Emmett a care package with items for the new baby.
