Steve Simmers Receives Endowed Chair Award

Headmaster Charlie Britton saved the best for last at the opening meeting for faculty and staff on August 26. He surprised Director of Facilities Steve Simmers with the Thomas R. Harper Chair Award, which recognizes outstanding service to the school.

Britton called Simmers to come forth in the same manner in which he is called upon by so many everyday…on a campus radio. As he made his way to the front of Tagart Memorial Chapel, Simmers received a standing ovation from colleagues, family, and friends.

Since joining McDonogh's maintenance department in 1979, Simmers has been at the forefront of every major and minor construction project on campus, including the kindergarten building, the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, the Burck Center, the Lower School addition, the Rosenberg Aquatic Center, and campus houses. His in-depth knowledge of all the utilities on campus--both above the ground and below—is invaluable.

During the announcement, Britton recognized the fact that Simmers' outside volunteer work as an emergency medical technician and firefighter bring a whole other level of skills to our school. "He has served the Chestnut Ridge Volunteer Fire Company for more than thirty years. On our campus, there are countless times when he is the first to respond to emergencies," Britton shared.

Britton concluded by saying, "His care for the campus and the people on the campus are a model for every person at McDonogh." It was then that Britton said with a smile on his face and a campus radio in hand, “Steve. Steve Simmers are you on the radio?"

The Thomas R. Harper Chair was established in 2001 by alumnus Robert Chilstrom to honor his 1963 classmate, Tom Harper, who retired in 2004 after teaching English at McDonogh for 36 years. McDonogh has six endowed chairs. Recipients hold them for three years and receive a stipend in addition to their salary.
